What Drives the Behavior to Commit Mass Murder?

A school plot to commit mass murder was foiled.  But what is it that is behind those who are in their twenties and down into their mid-teens that fuels their behavior to commit mass murders?

On October 1st of this year a 26-year-old who was enrolled as a student at Umpqua Community College entered the campus and fatally shot an assistant professor and eight students in a classroom. Nine other students were injured.  After being wounded, he committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.

On October 28th of this year, a school resource officer in the Linden (Michigan) school district received information that three local teens planned to commit mass murder by shooting up a high school and a middle school.  The two 15-year-olds and an 18-year-old had planned to carry out their actions on October 30th.  The three have been arraigned and charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree premeditated murder and threat of terrorism.  According to the Chief of Police, “…they had access to weapons and were credible threats.”

There should be a great concern as to how these teens were able to amass an arsenal to commit the massive amount of killing they had planned.  All sides in the debate on guns and gun access have to agree this has to be addressed.

Is there something we are missing that somehow in some way connects the reasoning behind those who would plan to commit these kinds of horrific crimes?

Now that this was stopped in time and before anyone was hurt, we’ve got to ask ourselves:

  • How did these teens have access to enough weapons to carry out the kind of carnage they had planned?
  • What is it that is fueling the behavior that would plan these kinds of attempts to commit mass murder of other children?
  • These kinds of things did not happen not that many years ago and now they seem to be happening at a much greater frequency and with an attempt to callously kill as many people (children) as possible. Why do you think that is the case?
